With a proud history dating back to 1956, Shortlidge Elementary School has been a cornerstone in the educational landscape of Wilmington, consistently serving as a nurturing environment for young learners in kindergarten to Grade 2. From academic enrichment to social and emotional development, the school is committed to providing a well-rounded educational experience to students. They have a robust special education department equipped to address and accommodate various learning differences, ensuring that every child receives the tailored support necessary for their academic journey.

Deborah Ashton

Deborah Ashton, Principal at Evan G. Shortlidge Academy, brings over 33 years of education experience to her role. A passionate educator at heart, she leverages her extensive background in elementary education (Pre-K through fifth grade) and leadership experience (including 12 years as an educational director) to foster a thriving learning environment.

Principal Ashton holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from York College and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Wilmington University. Certified in Educational Leadership, she excels at building strong relationships with students, families, and community partners.

Throughout her career, she has implemented successful before and after-school programs that boost both enrichment and intervention efforts. By partnering with community mentors, reading buddies, and lunch buddies, these programs helped increase reading scores and fostered positive connections with local stakeholders.

Driven by the belief that all students can thrive, Principal Ashton’s vision is to create a safe and joyful environment where staff and students collaborate to achieve academic success and overall well-being.

She is thrilled to join the Wilmington Learning Collaborative, where she will work alongside fellow leaders to ensure equitable access to resources and create a consistent learning experience for all students.
